In order for a new Volkswagen EV to qualify for the federal tax credit, it must meet certain IRS qualifications, including:1

  • Battery capacity of at least 7 kWh
  • Gross vehicle weight rating of less than 14,000 pounds
  • Final assembly in North America
  • MSRP of no more than $80,000 (SUVs, vans, trucks) or $55,000 (all other vehicles)

Does the EV tax credit apply to used cars?

As of 2023, used electric vehicles may now be eligible to receive a used clean vehicle tax credit. The following restrictions may apply:

  • Have a sales price of $25,000 or less
  • Have a model year at least two years older than the current calendar year when purchased (example: a vehicle purchased in 2023 would need a model year of 2021 or older)
  • Not have already been transferred after August 16, 2022, to a qualified buyer
